Overview
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (KCD2) is a single-player action RPG that takes place in 15th century Bohemia. Players take the role of Henry of Skalitz, the bodyguard to the nobleman Hans Capon of Perkstein, who is still on the path of avenging his murdered parents. KCD2 feature a massive, rich, open world setting where you can live out your days as you please. Whether that be making potions, being a blacksmith, being a knight, being a lover, or even being a menace and killing everyone. The open world is (mostly) available to roam freely however you see fit.
In Game
Now for the good stuff. This game is fucking great. The story never fails to intrigue, the gameplay is smooth as butter (except for the slightly annoying sword fighting mechanic), and the mini-games are built to perfection. If you want to spend your hours smacking a piece of metal to make weapons or horseshoes, go for it. Want to spend 10 minutes making one potion? Weird flex, but sure knock yourself out. Want to have dirty sex with a bunch of random ladies? It’s definitely possible. It does not matter what you want to do, you will have a blast doing it.
But who really gives a shit about the mechanics, when you get bullied by damn near every NPC in the game. When I tell you that you can’t walk down ANY street without some peasant throwing some shade your way, I mean it. You are royalty adjacent and get treated like dirt. I love it. KCD2 is funny and they thought of everything.
Fun Stuff
The world is beautifully built, the women are even more beautiful, and Lord Hans Capon is a possible love interest. Now for the whiny fucks who cry about their games have “too much gay”…. Get the fuck over it. You don’t have to have hot intimate sex with Hans, I didn’t choose to (at least for my first playthrough *wink wink*). So why is it a big deal? That’s just it, it isn’t a big deal. Just don’t do it, it’s optional for a reason. But if you want to keep being a creep and complaining about a video game, go for it I guess.
The Real People
Finally, a lot of games use real people as models for their characters, that’s not new. But it’s rare when you get such lovable people like Tom McKay (Henry) and Luke Dale (Hans). Not only do they play their characters to perfection, their IRL personas have been on display and captivating the hearts of many. They really are Henry and Hans and their obvious love for the world and story they were a part of makes this whole shitty existence we have worth it. It’s not often you see main characters play through their game, interact with the community, and talk so highly of their project. It’s a breath of fresh air in a highly toxic industry. We can only hope that the video game industry can look at this moment and grow/learn from it.
Thank you to Warhorse Studios for bringing a sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and thank you for not ruining the shit out of it like every other company around right now. You deserve all of the praise you’ve gotten and absolutely 0% of the hate (except for the damn fighting mechanic, I just fucking suck).
Rating : 9/10 (because I’m bad at sword fighting)
